5.    THE PRIZE    
11.   GENERAL    


The organiser is: Northumbrian Water Limited (company number: 02366703) of Northumbria House, Abbey Road, Pity Me, Durham, DH1 5FJ (“Northumbrian Water”).

2.1    The title of the competition is Mobile Application Creation and Development Competition.

2.2    Overall the aim of the competition is to enable Northumbrian Water to secure ideas and concepts in collaboration with WaterAid for a Mobile Application that supports water quality survey operations in field.

The competition is in two parts.  In stage one (named ‘Concept’)  the competition is open to all entrants meeting the entrant criteria to create an original mobile application concept .  Where you have registered and submitted an entry in stage one, and where the team lead is resdent in the UK, then you will also have the opportunity to participate in stage two.  

Stage two (Named ‘Execution’) is the opportunity collaborate with WaterAid to further develop the application if they so desire.  This 'Competition' only relates to stage one of the process which is a sponsored competition to generate ideas and early stage prototype mobile applications.

2.1    As part of participating in the competition, Northumbrian Water requires you to share resultant concepts and content.  To facilitate this Northumbrian Water is using TeamworkPM.  TeamworkPM is a lightweight, project management tool that supports teams and projects where deployments are made regularly. You will be provided with an account on receipt of your registration.   

2.2    Any game concepts entered into the competition must also comply with the technical requirements as set out in the following link:

2.3    Further development of the winning ideas of stage one is entirely at the behest of WaterAid and will be decided and managed by that organisation.


3.1    Stage one of the competition will run from 9.00am on 11th July 2017 (the "Opening Date") to 17.00om on 17 August 2017 (the "Closing Date") inclusive. 

3.2    All competition entries must be received by email and relevant submission support (images, code) placed on TeamworkPM by no later than midnight (11.59pm) on the Closing Date. All competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified. 

3.3    To enter the competition:
(a)    register for the competition at the following link: You will then receive an application form for the competition; and

(b)    complete and submit the application form online by the Closing Date (On registering you will receive a link to the form and instructions filling in your application form and then submitting it on the system) or emailing your completed application form to and quoting your registration username.

For the avoidance of doubt, Northumbrian Water does not accept any other form of entry into the competition (including, without limitation, by telephone or by post). 

3.4    No purchase is necessary and there is no charge to register for use of the website.

3.5    Northumbrian Water will not accept:

(a)    responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or

(b)    any late or incomplete applications.

3.6    By submitting a competition entry, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions.

3.9    The competition entries will be judged by a panel of three judges. Further details on the judging process and the basis for the judges’ will be disseminated to applicants prior to a final judging event and showcase. The decision of the panel of judges will be final.


4.    ELIGIBILITY                                                                                                                                                                                          

4.1    The competition is only open (in the case of individuals or partnerships) to residents in UK aged 16 - 19 years inclusively and not to other individuals or companies, except:

(a)    (if an individual or partnership) employees of Northumbrian Water or its holding or subsidiary companies;

(b)    (if an individual or partnership) employees or agents or suppliers of Northumbrian Water or its holding or subsidiary companies, who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration; 

Please note (if an individual or partnership) members of the immediate families or households of (a) and (b) above; this is acceptable but must be stated

4.2    In entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prize you may win. Northumbrian Water may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.

4.3    Northumbrian Water will not accept competition entries that are:

(a)    automatically generated by computer;
(b)    completed by third parties or in bulk;
(c)    illegible, have been altered, reconstructed, forged or tampered with; or
(d)    incomplete.

4.4    There is a limit of one entry per person as a team leader and one additional entry as an individual. 

4.5    Northumbrian Water reserves all rights to disqualify you if your conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the prize competition.

4.6  16 and 17 year olds are still classed as minors under the law.  If you are 16 or 17 and leading a team or application, you must declare this and a named adult needs to sponsor your application (as this is in effect a legal contract).  This is covered in the application form.

5.    THE PRIZE                                                                                                                                                                                          

5.1    The prizes are: £500for the winner of the competition, £250 for two further awards

5.2    The prize is not negotiable. 



6.1    The winner of the competition will be announced at a prize giving event at the showcase and judging event.  The event will be hosted at Northumbrian Water’s headquarters at an address to be provided no later than 2 weeks prior.

6.2    The decision of the judges nominated by Northumbrian Water is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

6.3    A list of winners can be viewed at the offices of Northumbrian Water set out in condition 1 from the Announcement Date for a period of 10 days.



7.1    We retain the right to showcase details of all entrants works submitted, and all entrants in the competition are requested to  attend the event referred to in condition 6.1 to showcase their entries. The winner will be selected from the entrants and the prize can be claimed immediately by the winner on the evening.

7.2    Northumbrian Water does not accept any responsibility if you are not able to take up the prize.



Insofar as is permitted by law, Northumbrian Water, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of Northumbrian Water, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.



9.1    All competition entries and any accompanying material submitted to Northumbrian Water will become the property of Northumbrian Water on receipt and will not be returned. 

9.2    You agree that Northumbrian Water and WaterAid may, but is not required to, make your entry available on its website and any other media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the competition. You agree to grant Northumbrian Water a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence, for the full period of any intellectual property rights in the competition entry and any accompanying materials, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the competition entry and any accompanying materials for such purposes. You expressly acknowledge that some or all elements of your competition entry may be used by Northumbrian Water and WaterAid in stage two and the appointed developer under the Development Contract and you shall be entitled to no further royalty or payment of any kind in respect of such use. 



10.1    If you are the winner of the competition, you agree that Northumbrian Water may use your name, image and town or county of residence to announce the winner of this competition and for any other reasonable and related promotional purposes.

10.2    You further agree to participate in any reasonable publicity required by Northumbrian Water.

10.3    By entering the competition, you agree that any personal information provided by you with the competition entry may be held and used only by Northumbrian Water or its agents and suppliers to administer the competition.


11.    GENERAL

11.1    If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, Northumbrian Water may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.

11.2    Northumbrian Water reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

11.3    These terms and conditions shall be governed by English law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
